They say it only serves you well to start early, as that is the only way to be counted among the best in the business. Brett Crawford of the Crawford Racing is a living testimony of that line. This 48-year-old introvert is known in the industry for his extremely keen eye for detail. Nothing escapes him and that shows in the quality of horses that he picks. Brett was only able to shine bright during his stint with Mrs Sabine Platter, whom he joined as a trainer, where he was able to produce 30 graded winners.
Post that stint, Brett decided to venture out on his own and that is when he launched the now world-famous Crawford Racing in 2009. Crawford racing has been instrumental in developing some of the finest talents in the arena of racing. Since 2009 they have won 19 group races over 8 seasons.
Brett seems to be motivated by the idea of not just bringing on the best to the turf, but also to be able to present the best quality bloodstock options to his clients. To this end, last year, he purchased one of the most expensive horses at the 2018 CTS Ready 2 Run Sale. This ideology has clearly been working for him, however, definitely, there is more to this than what meets the eye. Read on to know exactly that.
Q: Last year you purchased two horses (one was a son of Camelot and the other colt was sired by Silvano) at the CTS sales, where are they now?
A: The Camelot is called Finding Camelot, he has had 7 runs for 1 win and 3 places, he was placed in a Gr3 at 2, He has been gelded and will run next week in the Ready to Run race, He is a 2000m horse but we are trying to keep him sharp for the ready to run as it’s a 1400m race he has yet to go beyond 1600m, I'm confident we will see the best of him as he goes further. The Silvano is unraced and is a late-maturing horse,
Q: What are your plans for the CTS sales this year? Once you plan to attend a sale (with the intent to buy) how you plan after the catalogue has been published? Do you have any favourite sire-lines?
A: We always attend every sale, I think it's very important to show face even if you don’t have any orders, as you never know what can happen and what you may pick up. Sire lines and pedigree are always important
Q: When you buy at a Ready-2-Run sale what are your expectations and how are they different when you buy at yearling’s sales?
A: I believe that from the ready to run you get to see how the horse moves and what their temperament is like, they also show if they are early or late types, which helps a lot when looking for certain horses for certain clients
Q: Who are your current stable stars? Please tell us more about them?
A: Our stable stars include: 1) Undercover Agent (Captain Al ) who is a Gr.1 winner as well as Gr. 2 & Gr.3 winner. We are aiming him at the Queen's Plate & Sun Met. 2) Pacific Trade (Sali from Seattle) another Gr 1 winner. We are aiming him at the Gr 1 Cape Flying Championship. 3) Group One winning-Bold Respect (Bold Respect) is being aimed at the Gr.1 Cape Flying Championship 4) Group One-winning filly who recently won the Fillies Guineas, Front & Centre (Dynasty) 5) Run Fox Run (Fox Wedge) is unbeaten in 4 starts and a Listed winner. She will have her seasonal debut on December 14, 2019.
Q: And finally, who is your favourite horse in the world? And why?
A: In the world probably have to say, Whisky Baron. It was because of him I got to travel overseas and experience training in the UK & Dubai. The knowledge I gained from my travels with him has no doubt made me a better trainer.
