Mitole Heads The List of Potential Eclipse Sprint Champion
Many of racing’s brightest stars are being retired or freshened for 2020 campaigns. One of those recently retired horses is Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner, Mitole.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Mitole is likely to become the sixth straight Eclipse Champion from the Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner’ circle.
Once again, the chances are that the Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner will be named the Eclipse Award Champion Sprinter. If Mitole were to win the award, not only would he be the ninth in the last 10 years, but in the 35 previous runnings,
Mitole won six of his seven starts in 2019. As a 3yo last year, he won a maiden race, the Bachelor Stakes, and the Chick Lang Stakes before going to the sidelines.
Despite a tough Breeders’ Cup Sprint field which included Shancelot, Whitmore, Engage, Hog Creek Hustle, and Catalina Cruiser, William and Corinne Heiligbrodt owned champion cruised home in 1:09 flat for the six-furlong distance.
