Bob and Sandra Peters have been breeding & racing horses for 40 years. No one would doubt the instrumental role they played during the years when Perth invigorated Australian racing and was the country’s “big pond”. The Peters have patiently developed their beautiful pedigree lines through conscientious matings. And their success is a testament to the work they put into achieving the best results.
Arcadia Queen and Enticing Star both owned and bred by Bob Peters’ will be lining up in next month A$14 million Everest. Arcadia Queen herself has earned the tag as the next in line for the throne vacated by the great Winx herself.
The Impact speaks Bob Peters about his breeding ideology as well as his plans and ambitions:
Q: You both Arcadia Queen and Enticing Star? Arcadia Queen is touted as the next in line to the throne recently vacated by Winx, while Enticing Star can do no wrong. What attracted you to these pedigree lines?
A: Arcadia Queen and Enticing Star are from two families that we have been developing over man-years. Arcadia Queen is from Arcadia, the first daughter of Antique who we raced with some success and had produced for us quite a few fillies that we have raced and have joined our broodmare band. Enticing Star is from Favourite Star, a daughter of Lady Ashford who we also raced. Favourite Star also has several siblings from whom we are breeding.
Q: It’s a big thing when a breeder finds one of his horses in The Everest. You have two. How did this fortunate turn of events come about?
A: This is a hard question to BP as we do not breed a lot of sprinters – most of our breeding is more toward middle-distance
horses. We are very excited that these two horses have shown potential in sprinting.
Q: Which stallions do you currently have shares in?
A: We have shares in Pierro, Vancouver, Xtravagant (NZ: Animal Kingdom (USA: Dundeel (NZ: and Tosen Stardom)
Q: How did you come to buy your latest homestead? What makes it special?
A: We purchased our current farm 27 years ago and have been working on improving it ever since then. It is ideally placed being close to Perth on the edge of the Darling Scarp with a safe, high rainfall and is well-drained.
Q: Which mare-line would you say is your favourite and which has been the most successful? How do you decide what stallion would be suitable for which mare?
A: Our breeding program is based on families that we have developed over many years through as many as five generations. Most of our better racehorses trace back to the following mares – Antique, Lady Ashford, Miss Margaret, So Stunning (GB:, Flaming Heart and Reflected Image.
Q: Do you breed for specific races or do you breed for athleticism?
A: We aim our programme mostly for producing sound racehorses that can perform at all distances. We do not breed to aim at specific races.
Q: The decade is almost over. What is on your bucket list of things to do before 2030?
A: Before 2030 I would like to win an Everest, Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup, along with as many stakes races as possible.
