Preview: Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint 2020 ( Horses, Racecard, 2019 Video)
Gamine could be considered the most polarizing horse in this year's Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. With two romping wins in hand, the daughter of Into Mischief has overwhelmed the 3YO division in one-turn races and will face a new challenge when taking on older foes.
She looked like racing's newest superstar in her romping wins in the Test and Acorn but was ordinary in her third-place Kentucky Oaks finish.
With her strong early speed, that does not matter most of the time, but it could be problematic in a Breeders' Cup field filled with speed, including likely second and third choices, Serengeti Empress and Frank's Rockette.
As fast as Gamine is, she has never set the:43.74 opening half that Serengeti Empress did in her Ballerina win. Serengeti Empress needs the lead to win.
Bill Mott's three-year-old filly - Frank's Rockette has had ten career starts and has the speed to keep the favourites in her sight.
She does appear to be at her best at six-furlongs however, which means her connections will have an interesting decision to make between the seven-furlong Filly and Mare Sprint and the six-furlong Sprint against males.
Bell's the One has defeated Serengeti Empress in the Derby City Distaff and enjoys the seven-furlongs distance in a race. Sconsin is also showing great form and although it's a tight turnaround to the Breeders' Cup, Shamrock Rose was able to pull off the same feat in 2018.
